BLUF

It’s an acronym, not a spelling error.

It means Bottom Line Up Front.

It’s designed to enforce speed and clarity in reports, emails, and briefings. The basic premise is simple: put the most important details first.

In the military, we use it all the time especially briefing General officers. Intent must be clear – life-or-death decisions are made on the information presented.

In your BLUF, life-or-death decisions might not be made…but your rewarding career most definitely will depend on it!

It is well known you have approximately 6 seconds to capture the attention of a hiring manager to entice him/her/them to read further.

You want to clearly and succinctly let the hiring manager know immediately you will make the company more money than it takes to hire you. If applying for a government civilian position, you want to convince them you will help win budget battles or provide strategic direction.

As a hiring manager, what would you rather see at the top of a resume, LinkedIn profile or other career marketing document….the applicant’s BLUF, or some outdated objective statement/career summary.

I know what I’d choose.

If you need some help how to do that email Vinnie@ResoluteCareerCoaching.com and let’s set up a time to chat.
